Vietnamese Literature: A Historical Journey and Modern Values

From Legends to Folk Poetry

Vietnamese literature spans thousands of years, beginning with ancient legends, mythological stories about the origin of the nation, heroes, and those who created the land. The story of Con Rong Chau Tien (Children of the Dragon and Fairy), Lac Long Quan and Au Co,… are vivid examples of the power of mythology in prehistoric literature. Folk poetry, with folk songs, ca dao (folk verses), proverbs, and maxims, is a valuable treasure trove preserving the soul, intellect, and life experiences of the Vietnamese people through generations. Ca dao songs about love, homeland, and country, concise proverbs containing profound philosophies, have contributed to creating the unique cultural identity of the nation.

The Period of Classical Literature

The period of classical literature (10th – 19th centuries) marks the birth of literary works in Chinese characters, reflecting the interaction between Vietnamese and Chinese cultures. Notable works such as Chinh Phu Ngam by Dang Tran Con, Truyen Kieu by Nguyen Du, Luc Van Tien by Nguyen Dinh Chieu have become classic works, contributing to the glory of national literature. In particular, Truyen Kieu is considered a pinnacle of Vietnamese literature with profound humanistic values, reflecting the contemporary social reality truthfully and emotionally.

Modern and Contemporary Literature

Modern literature (20th century) is the period when Vietnamese literature was strongly influenced by Western literature, along with the development of revolutionary movements, creating diversity in genres and styles. Great writers such as Ho Chi Minh, Ngo Tat To, Nam Cao, Nguyen Hong… have left a deep impression on readers with works truthfully reflecting life and the struggle for national liberation. Contemporary literature (from 1975 to the present) continues to inherit and develop, bearing new and diverse colors, reflecting social issues and Vietnamese people in the integration period.

The Value of Vietnamese Literature

Vietnamese literature is not only a precious spiritual treasure of the nation but also an endless source of inspiration for future generations. It helps us better understand the history, culture, and people of Vietnam; it helps us cherish traditional values and strive for a brighter future. The study, preservation, and promotion of Vietnamese literature is the responsibility of every citizen, contributing to preserving and developing the national cultural identity.
